Two Stony Brook Department of Computer Science (CS) alumni recently received honorable IEEE, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, awards.

Claudio Silva, PhD, received the 2014 IEEE VGTC Visualization Technical Achievement Award. Silva received his doctorate in computer science from Stony Brook in 1996. Silva, who also has a degree in mathematics from the Federal University of Ceara--Brazil, is now a professor of computer science and engineering at New York University. His research interests include the intersection of visualization and geometric computing, the analysis of urban data. Silva developed the open-source VisTrails system, a widely used visualization and analysis tool. Most recently, he has been working with MLB Advanced Media on new techniques for baseball metrics.

In 2013, Silva was named an IEEE Fellow and he received the IEEE Faculty Award four times. In total he has received 12 “best paper” awards including the 2007 IEEE Visualization and 2008 IEEE Shape Modeling International.  

Jianying Hu, PhD, was named a 2015 IEEE Fellow for her contributions to pattern recognition in business and health analytics, and document analysis. Hu received her PhD in Computer Science at Stony Brook in 1993. She then went on to become a Principal Research Staff Member and Manager of Healthcare Analytics at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center at IBM Research. Hu’s research interests include statistical pattern recognition, machine learning, data mining and signal processing. As a researcher at IBM with a background in Electrical Engineering in an industrial research lab, Hu’s honor as an IEEE Fellow is particularly noteworthy.
