It’s not everyday that a professor has a paper accepted to a major conference, let alone three.
But Stony Brook University’s Xiaojun Bi isn’t like most professors. Three of his papers have been accepted to ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2018) taking place in Montreal from April 21-26,2018. The conference is hosted by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and is considered the most prestigious in the field of human computer interaction (HCI).
“It’s such a high honor to be recognized for all of our hard work at Stony Brook over the past few months,” said Bi. “This is one of the top conferences each year, and I couldn’t be happier to present these papers in front of so many great individuals.”
Bi has a history of success at CHI. Since Bi’s first CHI paper was accepted in 2009, he has papers accepted to CHI every year and has published 19 papers at CHI.
“We are proud of Xiaojun’s work at Stony Brook,” Samir Das, chair of the Department of Computer Science, said. “His work continues to make a difference as we look at how we can change the way people interact with computing devices whether it be a smartphone, a wearable, or even a household appliance.”
With each paper, Prof. Bi thoroughly details ways to make HCI easier for a diverse community of users.
The paper, WrisText: One-handed Text Entry on Smartwatch using Wrist Gestures, received the CHI 2018 Honorable Mention Award. This places the paper in the top five percent of all papers submitted for the prestigious conference.
In addition to WrisText, Bi will also be presenting Typing on an Invisible Keyboard co-authored with his students Suwen Zhu, Tianyao Luo, and Google research scientist Shumin Zhai. The third paper that will be presented M3 Gesture Menu: Design and Experimental Analyses of Marking Menus for Touchscreen Mobile Interaction is co-authored by Jingjie Zheng, Kun Li, Yang Li, and Shumin Zhai.

Xiaojun Bi is an assistant professor at Stony Brook University’s Department of Computer Science, starting his appointment in 2017.. His research lies in Human Computer Interaction, with a focus on computational interaction especially on Post-PC computing devices. He is a two-time Google Faculty Research Award winner (2017, 2018), and won ACM CHI Honorable Mention Award three times in the past four years (2015, 2017, and 2018), in 2018 notably for his paper that outlined the design, decoding algorithm and implementation for WrisText, a system that allows users to enter text on smartwatches via wrist gestures. He was also the recipient of the 2013 Google Most Influential Paper Award. Before coming to Stony Brook, he was a Research Scientist at Google. This spring, Bi is teaching CSE 594-Advanced Topics in Human Computer Interaction.
