This year, the focus of CS Tech Day on September 18 is CS Interface: Multimedia, VR, and Gaming in 2015. Stony Brook University’s Department of Computer Science and the Stony Brook University Career Center have once again teamed up for this event and they are proud to include a lively panel of industry leaders discussing their views on the user interface experience in product development. You don’t want to miss hearing the views of the following exciting panelists:
Arnav Shah is a Software Engineer and Research Scientist at Google in New York, and an SBU alum. He presently works in the Civic Engagement group under Google Search, and has also done work with Google Docs, Google Ideas, and Google Glass. Arnav is especially interested in the mindful use and non-use of technology. He is interested in improving people’s day-to-day lives, particularly through physical activity, health, eating well, practical civic engagement, and the application of good data, science, and human dynamics. Arnav is also a master of the physical arts. He is a practitioner of Capoeira, former instructor of Kyokushin karate, and immensely experienced inline skater.
Frank Zinghini, Applied Visions, Inc.
Frank is a native Long Islander who graduated from Stony Brook University with his bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering and a master’s degree in Computer Science. Today, Frank is President/CEO of Applied Visions, Inc., a software development company that he founded to create visual software solutions for solving complex problems. AVI provides solutions in cyber security, business applications, and command and control systems to government and commercial customers worldwide. Applied Visions supports the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences by funding a student scholarship, and Frank serves on the Computer Science Advisory Board.
Lori Scarlatos, Stony Brook University
Lori Scarlatos is an Associate Professor in the department of Technology and Society at Stony Brook University. Her research focuses on the user experience of educational applications, incorporating techniques such as tangible user interfaces, physical computing, multi-modal input, collaborative learning spaces, and multiplayer gaming. This work has been funded by sources including the National Science Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Scarlatos earned her Ph.D. in 1993 from the department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University, and has 10 years experience working in industry in addition to her academic experience.
Margaret Anne Schedel, Center for Digital Arts, Culture and Technology
Margaret Anne Schedel is a composer and cellist specializing in the creation and performance of ferociously interactive media. While working towards a DMA in music composition at the University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music, her interactive multimedia opera, A King Listens, premiered at the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center and was profiled by Apple, Inc. She is a joint author of Electronic Music and recently edited an issue of Organised Sound on the aesthetics of sonification. Her research focuses on computer recognition of gesture in music, the sustainability of technology in art, and sonification of data. As an Associate Professor of Music at Stony Brook University, she serves as Co-Director of Computer Music and is the Director of cDACT, the consortium for digital art, culture and technology.
Tony Scarlatos, Department of Computer Science
Tony worked as an art director for 12 years, before teaching at Stony Brook, for companies such as Doubleday and Cablevision. Tony's work received numerous national awards, such as the Federal Design Achievement Award, and was published in American Artist magazine. He has developed software for LILCO, the NY State Dept. of Education, SUNY Suffolk, Brooklyn College, and Columbia University. Tony has his own multimedia software development company, Art&Sol, with clients such as the Long Island Museum.
Tyler Roye is the co-founder and CEO of eGifter, the eGifting Company™, which powers an innovative SaaS eGifting platform for some of the nation’s largest retailers. The company also operates a consumer facing marketplace (web, iOS, and Android) selling more than 225 brands of digital gift cards. eGifter has developed a suite of truly disruptive technology that is revolutionizing gift-giving for both consumers and retailers. Prior to co-founding eGifter, Tyler was the co-founder and CEO of Invision.com, Inc., one of the first and most innovative eCommerce and cloud service providers in the country. He successfully sold the fast-growing venture in 2007. Tyler is the co-founder and Vice Chairman of the Long Island Software and Technology Network (LISTnet). Tyler and his partners also own and operate LaunchPad Huntington, a tech accelerator and co-working space which has become the epicenter of the Long Island startup community.
