IV is involved in a number of Stony Brook University's systemwide research initiatives as well as sponsored research projects.

In 2022 he was named the technical director of the SUNY-IBM AI Collaborative Research Alliance program, a strategic partnership between SUNY and IBM aimed at advancing artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative has resulted in approximately $500,000 in research funding for the Department of Computer Science. 

Recent funded research includes serving as Co-PI on the NIH/NEI funded project, Intelligent Text Input and Editing Methods on Smartphones for Blind Users. He is also the PI on the $1.4M project, Caregiver-Robot Symbiosis to Individualize Caregiving Robot Assistants for People with ALS, funded by the Department of Defense.
