Computer Science Department User Accounts:
The CS Department has two account systems in place. One account to access the Windows Infrastructure and one account to access the Unix Infrastructure. The two accounts will let you access the following resources:
Unix Account
- Compute1
- CompServ
Windows Account
- RD WebAccess
- Practice Labs
- CS_Secure (WiFi)
- G-Suite (Mail)
- SSO (Single Sign-On)
There are various constraints with regards to the passwords for each system. They are outlined below:
Windows
- Minimum 8 characters
- Must not contain your name or a dictionary word
- Must contain at least 3 of the character set (Capital letters, small letters, numbers, special characters)
- Passwords cannot contain the user's account name or parts of the user's full name that exceed two consecutive characters

Unix
- Minimum 8 characters
- Must not contain your name or a dictionary word
HOW TO LOG INTO WINDOWS
Faculty/Staff: Username: <CS Department ID/Username>
Password: “CS Department Password” (Same account used to access department email)
Students:
Username: <Net ID> (Same username provided to you by campus)
Password: “CS Department Password” (Password set by you after your initial login) **Note: The first time a student logs in to the system they will use the initial password sent to them when their account was created. This initial password is usually “Sbcs<SB 9 Digit ID Number>”. Students that have been in the department in previous semesters will use the password they used during the past semesters.
HOW TO LOG INTO UNIX/LINUX
Faculty/Staff: Username: <CS Department ID/Username>
Password: “Unix Password”
Students:
Username: <Net ID> (Same username provided to you by campus)
Password: “Unix Password
CHANGING PASSWORDS
How can I change my unix password? Log into compserv.cs.sunysb.edu or compute.cs.sunysb.edu and execute: yppasswd You'll need to type the old password and then the new one (twice). Please note that you will not be allowed to reuse the old password or minor variations of it. You need to wait 60-90 seconds for the change to propagate before using the new password.
How can I change my password in Windows? Login to a workstation that is part of the CS Windows domain (all workstations in the department Windows labs). Once you are successfully logged in, type: ctl-alt+del and select "Change Password" and fill in the blanks. Passwords on Windows are case sensitive so watch out for the caps lock button. You can also change your password by navigating to http://www.cs.stonybrook.edu/about/csintranet/faqs/managePasswords and following the on screen instructions to change your password
